I've pretty much been dying to get a new desktop for a looong time now. My current desktop is a good 10 years old. I'm thinking about getting an all-in-one because I think it would be awesome to have a compact, few wires necessary, transportable machine. I really blame Apple for this because I never would have thought I wanted one until I saw the iMac in the Best Buy store. I'm still not ready to take the Apple plunge, so I was wondering if anyone else had heard about a good all-in-one. Dell has one (my go-to choice for computers), but it's not as customizable as I'd like.

I dislike canned comps of any flavor.. and I really don't like small containers for comps.

Small boxes scream heat problems.. and lack of room to work or add expansion cards...

Video cards are always a pain in the ass to fit in smaller boxes...

but if you don't plan on gaming on the box.. they work just fine.

canned comps these days are more upgrade friendly.

I bought my wife a cheap dual core (amd 5000+, 2GB ram, 500GB HD) mid-tower canned box from Fry's for $350. Her box is now bigger than my custom comp minus video card... never depend on their onboard video card... just disable it .. and put somthing decent in (I gave her my old 7800GT)... that is if you want a quick fix for gaming... if not.. just use your stock mini/flat computer for work.. and buy a real size computer for gaming.

my 2 cents.

I found a no-name brand all-in-one that my school just bought a bunch of and I thought it was neat cause it's pretty customizable (quad-cores, lots of ram, big hard drive, etc.) but I just can't pull the trigger. I'm thinking I'll wait until Black Friday rolls around and see what kind of deals they have on towers. Or I'll just wait til I move back to CA so I don't have to lug a new desktop around. Looks like I'll be gaming, when I can game, on my laptop still :(.

The ZPC-9100™ supports stunning media, incredible visuals and new 3D capabilities based on the Intel 915G Express Chipset. For business users, Intel validates the chipset, processor, graphics and software stack to provide a well-tested platform with support for Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux (top distributions) and OS/2 (SciTech). Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) 3.0 supports up to 128MB of video memory; system memory is allocated where it is needed dynamically.

and you will not be able to squeeze a decent video card into any all-in-one PC.

Re-quoting the most important part!

if you plan to play anything more Taxing than Minesweeper.. don't buy an all-in-one.

Anyone here remember the Ski game that used to be on OLDASS computers? If you ran out of time or something a yeti'd eat you?

I screamed in rage at that yeti...

Well, I ended up biting the bullet and buying...

a new dell desktop.

Now, I don't want hear the dell hate. My previous desktop was a dell and I've had it for 8 years and that puppy could still play WoW up until I quit.

Here's the important stuff:

1 Intel® Core™2 Quad processor Q6600 (8MB L2, 2.4GHz, 1066FSB)
1 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz- 4DIMMs
1 ATI Radeon HD3650 256MB
1 500GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
1 Dell 19 in 1 Media Card Reader
1 Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-Bit
1 Integrated 10/100 Ethernet
1 Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 9.0 Multi-Language
1 Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 16x DVD+/-RW w/ dbl layer write capable
1 Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
1 1Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis

I'd like to find a PCI TV tuner and wireless network card on Black Friday. I have both of those things in an external form, but since I couldn't have a minimalist all-in-one, I refuse to have a bunch of stuff laying around.
